MySpace Offers New SDK To Android, iPhone Developers

It’s possible that MySpace will soon become much more popular with people who own iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads, and Android devices. MySpace announced this afternoon that it’s launched a new SDK designed to make it easier for developers to integrate the site into their applications.
MySpace’s timing is excellent. Earlier today, a report from Gartner indicated that Android and the iPhone OS are the only two mobile operating systems to have seen a year-over-year increase in market share, and on Monday, MySpace introduced new privacy settings that could impress many of the users Facebook’s scared off.
The new SDK itself isn’t exactly bad, either. MySpace said that it’s offering developers an integrated login UI, and then it’s covered all the basics by making sure people can send status and mood updates, see their friends, and upload photos and videos.
What’s more, MySpace explained in a statement, "MySpace will be supporting and frequently updating the SDK based on developer and user feedback, so please let us know what you think as you start working with the SDK."
It might really be worth looking for a slight bounce (or at least a smaller drop-off) in MySpace’s user stats over the next few months, then.
A Look at China and Social Media

How do Westerners perceive social media in China and other Eastern cultures? Based on media reports, most opinions evolve around negative or political activities. But according to Sam Flemming of CIC, Westerners can actually learn a lot from China’s social practices.
First of all, social media has been prominent in China since the 1990’s. Although Facebook and Twitter receive a lot of negative press in China, social activity is still alive with local social platforms.
While social networks and blogs are dominant social players in China, online message boards called BBS, are also very popular. Flemming says many conversations about brands take place on these BBS sites. He points out that there are approximately 172 million bloggers in China and over 100 million users on local social networking platforms.
As Flemming explains to WebProNews, the Chinese watch the West and adopt and develop ideas. The West, however, does not do this. Flemming calls this a “missed opportunity” on behalf of the West, since many unique ideas could be applied if they would listen. In addition, companies could have a competitive advantage if they watch and learn from China, Japan, and Korea.
“The fact is social media is more developed in the East… now social media marketing or applications of social media, [it] may be there are more advanced or more developed ideas in the states, but there’s a lot that can be learned both ways.”
How do you value social media activities in Eastern cultures such as China?

Fresh off News Corp.’s quarterly earnings report, MySpace has added a new member to its team, and he looks more than capable of helping the site move forward. In fact, the man’s spent a good deal of time working for a certain search giant, and he’ll oversee two businesses on which MySpace is putting more and more emphasis.
A MySpace spokesperson told WebProNews in an email, "MySpace is announcing Manu Rekhi as the new GM of MySpace Games and Developer Platform. Manu brings to this role an extensive background in strategic business and product development with a variety of companies including Google and Lolapps."
Lolapps was Rekhi’s most recent employer. He started there in April of last year, and has been overseeing product strategy, marketing, business development, and corporate development. Previously, Rekhi spent about four years at Google, working as both a product manager and a product marketing manager.
One other detail worth noting: a coworker of Rekhi’s at Google wrote on his LinkedIn profile, "Manu has been ‘the man’ with respect to Google’s business strategy around Orkut (a Google community and social networking product). He’s an expert in global online social media usage trends, monetization approaches and growth strategies."
Finally, going back even further, Rekhi’s educational experience is impressive, too, considering that he earned degrees from Columbia Business School and Boston University.
Best and Worst Practices for Facebook

Although many companies are utilizing social media sites such as Facebook, they are not all using it to the full potential. As Greg Finn of 10e20 tells WebProNews, Facebook can be a very powerful tool for businesses if they properly use events, groups, and profiles.
For starters, many businesses fail to set their Facebook page apart. He says businesses need to brand their page as their own. Although updating statuses are important, it is not enough. He suggests using tabs since they help to create a valuable experience for the user.
While many businesses use features such as Facebook Connect for promotions, Facebook made some changes regarding promotions back in November. The social networking giant said businesses needed to have an approved Facebook application to run any type of promotion. As a result, many small businesses were hurt.
Finn says businesses can get around the terms of service by involving charities. In the end, if the business is able to gain more fans, both it and the charity benefit.
In regards to worst practices, Finn says businesses need to eliminate confusion for users and understand that Facebook users are different than RSS users. He advises businesses monitor all their pages, whether created by them or not, and combine them.
