We’re all aware that a talented workforce often involves a wide variety of skill sets, personalities, and communication styles. Employees are typically a diverse group with different experiences and needs. Each has his or her own expectations from managers, peers and the company as a whole. If managed properly, each of these individuals and teams collectively can work to the best of their ability.
There are different generations of workers in today’s workforce. Each of them possesses their own unique skills and talents. However, attempting to manage these various experience levels and expectations can be difficult. Specifically, its important to understand that various generations of workers come with certain employment values and expectations.
To begin, try to see how the different generations of workers operate. The traditional worker (born prior to 1946) is most often associated with respect for management and authoritative figures. They also usually have a strong work ethic. Baby Boomers (1946-1964) come from larger families and thus work well with others. They are team oriented, optimistic and very competitive. They work hard but can sometimes question authority. Generation X (1965-1981) is comprised of individuals who are extremely independent. They rely heavily on technology and strive for a balanced work and personal life. Lastly, Generation Y (1982-2000) relies the most on technology for communication and other aspects of their lives. They like giving back to their community but focus a great deal on personal achievement.
It’s important to keep in mind that these different generations of workers can teach each other many things. This is why open communication among employees should be encouraged. A cooperative atmosphere that invites workers to share their ideas is critical. In fact, older workers can teach younger ones the importance of interpersonal skills, loyalty and making it through a wide variety of situations. They can share their expertise and help foster the careers of younger workers.
Likewise, younger workers have much to bring to the table. They are experts at new technology and may be able to share insights into new tools that might be useful to others. They bring in optimism and are capable of retrieving information quickly and efficiently.
No matter which employee you are dealing with, its important to see the best attributes of every individual. As a manager, encourage them to work hard on areas where growth is needed and continue to improve their talents and strengths.
